Together we raised over $80,000

A very special thank you to everyone who supported the Masi fundraising event on September 26th. The event helped raise over $80,000 towards the completion of the youth centre in Masiphumelele, Cape Town.

We are all very touched by the outcome of the event and all your donations. This is a strong testament of the compassionate community we live in, our commitment to global citizenship, and making the world a better place for everyone.

The funds have been forwarded to the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation in South Africa via the Vancouver Foundation. This will allow us to complete the construction of the Masi Youth Centre. Thank you for helping to make this happen!

I am very excited to let you know that the plan is to commence construction in January 2010, and to have the opening ceremonies of the Youth Centre in Masiphumelele in June 2010 just before the World Cup. This is very exciting news for us, who have been supporting the project, and it will be transform the lives of the children and youth of the township of Masiphumelele. Here are copies of MYP’s architect, Nelson Barbosa's drawings, providing an overview of the site:

A team of local workers have been selected to maximize the positive economic effect of the project on the region. At least 50% of the construction workers will be local youth, who will be empowered to participate in the development of their own centre.

With the end-of-the-year fast approaching this is a good time to reflect on the past year and share with you the progress we have made on the Masiphumelele Youth Project (MYP). During such uncertain times, and with so much of our world in upheaval, it is more important than ever to find hope and optimism where ever possible. The story of MYP is one of much inspiration, hope and achievement.

FUNDRAISING
To date we have raised approximately US$ 305,000 (R 3.1 million Rand) and that is thanks to the incredible generosity of all our donors worldwide.

This year, personal donations from Vancouver alone amounted to close to US$ 70,000 (0.7 million Rand). This was following a very successful fundraising event in Vancouver that raised approximately US$ 45,000, and included a silent and live auction, musical feature and wine tasting. We were especially thrilled to host a very talented 15-year old from the “Future Fighters” Youth Group in Masiphumelele. In July, there was a special fundraising event in South Africa, hosted by the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation in Cape Town, where approximately US$ 30,000 (R 0.3 million Rand) was raised.

It is quite amazing to see how far we have come and that is because of individuals’ generosity, such as yours that the project has made this amazing progress.

Looking ahead, to realize the children’s dream we still have a little further to go; we need to raise an additional US$ 116,000 (R 1.2 million Rand) to get us to our target of US$ 422,000 (R 4.3 million Rand).

REALIZING THE DREAM
The plan is to open the doors of ‘Kethuphila’ Choose Life Youth Centre in Masiphumelele in early 2010. This is very exciting news for us, who have been supporting the project, and it is even more exciting news for the children and youth of the township of Masiphumelele.

To ensure this dream is realized, and the doors of the youth centre are opened we need to raise the remaining US$ 116,000 and for that we need your support.

We have launched the 75/75 Masi Campaign to raise 75% of funds in Desmond Tutu's 75th year

To date we have raised 45% of our target!

We are very excited to announce the 75/75 Masi Campaign in to raise R3 million to establish a youth centre in Masiphumelele, Cape Town. We are launching in the UK, Europe and Israel in May 2007. Australia and New Zealand will be launching soon...stay tuned! The 75/75 Masi Campaign aims to raise 75% of the funds by the end of 2007, Desmond Tutu's 75th year. So far we have raised 45% of our target at fundraisers in Cape Town, Vancouver, and the U.S.

Our implementation has begun:

the land for the site of the Youth Centre has been purchased
the sports' program will kick off on June 16 - South Africa Youth Day
the architect's plans are ready
the builder has been hired
at least 50% of the construction workers will be local Masi youth - the community project coordinator is being hired

We embarked on this exciting journey in January 2006 with the intention of bringing some benefit to the young people and communities living with HIV and AIDS in South Africa. The project was conceived by Michael Hayden and fellow University of Cape Town medical Class of '75 alumni (Charlie Johnson, Bitty Muller, Shake Seigel, Sophie Kisting, Gail Loon-Lustig, Roelof Lourens, Julie Jaffer and Joan Louwrens) at a 30th class reunion in December 2005. The seed was planted and shortly therafter, a Steering Committee was formed to help guide the initiative forward and turn the idea into a concrete plan. We are thrilled to be able to share our exciting plans and vision with the entire Class of '75, other supporters and donors around the world! Our small group has done much in a short period of time and we feel tremendously privileged to be a part of this incredible opportunity to make a positive difference in young people's lives in Masiphumelele.

We need your support to reach our target! Every donation will be made in full to the Campaign. We welcome your support in more ways than just one - your money, time, and energy are equally appreciated!
